Friends of the Moonridge Zoo announce the third annual BLUES FOR THE ZOO
benefit concert to celebrate this unique Alpine animal rescue
sanctuary. The afternoon lakeside concert will raise funds for
the Mooonridge Animal Park’s wildlife rehabilitation program.
BLUES FOR THE ZOO is set for Saturday, August 4, 2012 at Big
Bear Lake’s Swim Beach Outdoor Amphitheater, 41220 Park Avenue,
Big Bear Lake 92315, with a line-up of world class Blues artists
including a touch of New Orleans Zydeco.
On the sandy shoreline of Big Bear Lake, surrounded by ancient
pine trees, this setting offers a scenic backdrop for a day of
internationally recognized musicians along with a selection of
local arts and crafts and a freshly prepared food/beverage menu.
Headlining the afternoon of music is Zydeco “crown prince” CJ
Chenier. According to Downbeat Magazine, "his vocals and
accordion drip with top-line Louisiana hot sauce.” Chenier
carries on in the tradition of his father Zydeco great Clifton
Chenier, playing accordion-based American blues and danceable
two-steps, singing in both French and English.
No blues festival is complete without a guitar hero and Jimmy
Thackery fits the bill. The six-string virtuoso is known to
unleash an intense volley of rockin' blues guitar, guaranteed to
leave crowds emotionally spent. His double-edged guitar dynamics
allow him to fire off tracer missiles, bend a note so it will
fit under a limbo bar, run off dive bomber riffs and find space
within the trembling of one stinging note.
Starting out the day’s musical gumbo will be acoustic Delta
blues interpreter Alvin Youngblood Hart. Influenced by the deep
country blues, Hart is known as one of the world's foremost
practitioners of that genre. After the release of his 1996 major
label debut recording, the all-acoustic BIG MAMA'S DOOR (Okeh/Sony
Records), Hart was honored with the Best New Artist award by the
Blues Foundation in Memphis. Hart’s subsequent CD “Down In the
Alley” in 2002 was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best
Traditional Blues category. He was featured in the Denzel
Washington film “The Great Debaters,” playing a 1930s juke joint
musician and contributing several songs to the soundtrack.
Continuing in the path laid down by contemporary acoustic blues
practitioners like Taj Mahal, his roots also reach back to the
classic stylings of Charley Patton, Leadbelly and Blind Willie
McTell.
Profits from the charity concert will benefit the Moonridge
Animal Park, distinguished as the only zoological facility in
the United States located in an Alpine/Sub-Alpine environment,
dedicated to the preservation of its indigenous species. The
park is a fully licensed facility for injured wildlife and
confiscated animals. Friends of the Moonridge Zoo is a 501(C)(3)
nonprofit organization formed to support the park’s programs
through fundraising, volunteer coordination and educational
activities.
Beach chairs and blankets are welcome for lawn festival-style
seating, no coolers please (a selection of food and beverage
will be available on site). Tickets may be purchased in person
or via telephone from the Big Bear Chamber of Commerce,
909-866-4607, at the Moonridge Animal Park Gift Shop (43285
Goldmine Drive in Big Bear Lake) or online at

old-school influences and modern day rock. The 2 p.m. show
features Whiteboy James and the Blues Express. This
gritty-blues-grind band is made up of James ‘Whiteboy’ Page

Guitarist Scott Abeyta - the founder and principal of Rip
Cat Records. Headlining at 3 p.m. is Gino Matteo, a musician

Bullet Band on Sun., June 3.
Got
‘moves like Jagger?’ It’s time to find out as
Sun., June 10 delivers a
Tribute to the Rolling Stones with The Ultimate
Stones.
Journey tribute band,
DSB, performs on Sun., June
17th and is led by vocalist Juan del Castillo, known
for sounding like the renowned lead singer Steve Perry of
the “real“Journey. Journey has sold over 55 million albums
worldwide and continues its reign at the very top of the
short list of rock bands whose music has truly stood the
test of time.
Sun., July 1,
Springsteen! ,an homage to Bruce Springsteen
and the E Street Band commands the stage with the passionate
guitar playing of Josh Tanner who reincarnates Bruce’s
“Glory Days.”
The
concert series takes a bow with a groovy two-day Woodstock
Tribute Weekend on Sat., July 7 and
Sun., July 8, bringing together the sound and
feel of several rock legends from the infamous 1969
Woodstock concert before the O.C. Market Place brief hiatus
for the annual Orange County Fair. A tribute to The Who by The Who
Revue on July 7
at Noon and 2 p.m. takes on Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey
in a remarkable retro way.
On July 8Aquarius
will take you on a magic carpet ride back to the 60s so you
can relive the experience of Woodstock through Janis Joplin,
Jimi Hendrix, Creedence Clearwater Revival and many more.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., both
days will also include tie dye vendors, artisans, hippie
stilt walkers, and a new Peace, Love and Ice Cream stage

sweetened up version of the legendary concert offering ice
cream eating contests, Farrell’s Psychedelic Rainbow Ice
Cream in take home size, hippie hula hooping, Kidstock
Karaoke, a giant “Color Your World” mural and other
activities.
In
addition to the concerts, the 3rd Annual West
Coast Rockabilly Showdown will be held five corresponding
Saturdays of the Sunday tribute band shows. Twelve bands
selected from electronic auditions will be battling it out
for a spot in the finals, $2,500 in cash awards and an
opportunity to open for a top name Rockabilly band on Sat.
Sept. 1. Three bands perform on Saturdays, May 26, June 2, 9
and 16 at noon, 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. First place winners from
each date return on Sat. June 30 to perform at noon, 1 p.m.,

history, sinking and rediscovery

Robert Schwemmer will present historical research he has uncovered on the
Union Oil Company tanker S S Montebello, which was torpedoed by
a Japanese submarine in 1941. Schwemmer will share underwater
imagery of the sunken ship that sits in 900 feet of water, just
south of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Richard
Quincy, the last known living crew member aboard the Montebello
when it sank, will be in attendance.
Schwemmer, who serves on the museum’s board of directors, is the
West Coast Regional Maritime Heritage Coordinator for NOAA
Office of National Marine Sanctuaries. Mr. Schwemmer was part of
the science team that rediscovered the wreck in 1996 in the
two-manned submersible Delta. In 2009, the Montebello Assessment
Task Force was established at the request of California State
Senator Sam Blakeslee to determine the likelihood of the sunken
ship’s release of more than 3,000,000 gallons of crude oil that
potentially could still be onboard. In 2011, the U.S. Coast
Guard awarded a contract to Global Diving & Salvage to conduct
an assessment of the condition of the sunken tanker and
determine if the oil was still onboard. Schwemmer served on the
taskforce and was on board the OSRV Nanuq during the assessment
and served as a technical advisor. The history of the Montebello
is still deeply rooted in the communities of Cambria, Cayucos
and Morro Bay, for these citizens took heroic action to launch a
sea and land rescue for the Montebello’s crew of 38. “Today, 70
years after the sinking of the Montebello people are just
learning about the little known history of Japanese submarines
attacking and sinking American merchant ships within site of the
California shoreline,” said Robert Schwemmer. The lecture is
free for SBMM members and $5 for non-members. To RSVP and
purchase tickets call 805-962-8404 x 115 and to view more film,
lectures and exhibits at the museum visit www.sbmm.org.

Warn
Outdoor
Recreationists
to Take Precautions this Season
SACRAMENTO,
Calif.– Outdoor recreationists should take serious precautions
against cold temperatures and swift currents when in or near
waterthis spring. Despite this year’s
below-normal snowfall, the spring snowmelt can still
result in swift and cold river flows that can create treacherous
conditions for all recreationists – waders, swimmers, paddlers,
boaters, anglers, and even hikers cooling off at the water’s
edge.
The utility and state departments cautioned that even though the
water content of California’s mountain snowpack is near 40
percent of normal, there is still a significant amount of water
in the snowpack and it is rapidly melting as mid-spring
temperatures continue to warm. As
warmer weather and longer days accelerate melting snow in
mountainous regions, water temperatures will continue to drop
and flows will continue to rise in waterways and reservoirs,
with some reservoirs spilling and resulting in higher flows
downstream.
“Those
planning outings near mountain streams, rivers and reservoirs
need to be vigilant and take appropriate safety measures,” said
Debbie Powell, director of PG&E’s hydro generation department.
“Water flows will fluctuate with the warming and cooling of the
day so always be prepared for a change in conditions.”
“Even
experienced swimmers can get caught in swift river flows,” said
DBW’s Acting Director Lucia C. Becerra. “Stay safe by checking
local
water conditions before taking a boating trip,
wear a life jacket, and
avoid alcohol.”
“Spring is a wonderful time to visit our beautiful lakes and
fast-moving
rivers,” said Ruth Coleman, director of California State Parks.
“But please read the safety tips in this water safety warning
because making a mistake could threaten the life of a loved
one.”
Water safety tips:
Know the Water
·
Sudden immersion in cold water
can stimulate the “gasp reflex” causing an involuntary
inhalation of air or water. It can even trigger cardiac arrest,
temporary paralysis, hypothermia and drowning.
When faced with swift water, even the strongest
swimmers may be easily overwhelmed.
·
Cold water entering the ear canal
can cause vertigo and disorientation. This may confuse swimmers,
causing them to venture deeper into the water.
Know your limits
·
Swimming in open water is more
difficult than in a swimming pool – people tire more quickly and
can get into trouble.
·
Cold water causes impairment leading to fatalities. It reduces
body heat 25
to
30 times faster than air does at the same
temperature.
·
Many unseen obstacles can be lurking below the water’s surface.
Swift water can make these obstacles even more treacherous.
Guided trips for inexperienced paddlers are recommended.
Wear a life
jacket
·
Conditions change quickly in open
water and even the best swimmers can misjudge the water and
their skills when boating or swimming. Wearing a life jacket can
increase survival time.
·
A life jacket can provide some
thermal protection against the onset of hypothermia and keep you
afloat until someone else can rescue you.
Parental
Supervision
Actively
supervise children in and around open bodies of water,
giving them your undivided attention. Appoint a designated
“water watcher,” taking turns with other adults.
Teach children that swimming in open water is
not the same as swimming in a pool: they need to be aware of
uneven surfaces, river currents, ocean undertow and changing
weather.
Know the Law
·Every child
under 13must wear
a Coast Guard-approved
life jacket when on a moving vessel that is 26 feet or less in
length.
A Coast Guard-approved life jacket must be
carried for each person on board a boat. This includes rigid or
inflatable paddlecraft.
·
Every person on board a personal
watercraft (popularly known as “jet skis”) and any person being
towed behind a vessel must wear a Coast Guard-approved life
jacket.
·
It is against the law to operate a
boat or water ski with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of
0.08 percent or more. You can be arrested even when your BAC is
less than 0.08 percent if conditions are deemed to be unsafe.
About DBW
DBW
enhances public access to California’s waterways and promotes
on-the-water safety to California’s more than four million
motorized and non-motorized boaters through programs funded by
vessel registration fees, boating fuel tax dollars and boating
facility construction loan payments. For more information, visit
www.dbw.ca.gov.

SACRAMENTO,
Calif.
– California’s Department of Boating and
Waterways (DBW) and Coastal Commission’s Boating Clean and Green
Program invite boaters to become Dockwalkers.
Training is free and Dockwalking is a fantastic way to interact
with boaters to help keep California’s marinas, waterways, and
ocean clean and healthy.
“It is important for boaters to not only boat
safely, but to also implement clean boating practices,” stated
DBW’s Acting Director Lucia Becerra. “Safety and protecting the
environment go hand in hand.”
The Dockwalker Program educates boaters to be
safe and environmentally sound while boating in California
through its volunteer Dockwalkers. The volunteers are trained to
conduct face-to-face boater education and distribute boater kits
with educational information while visiting marinas, boat launch
ramps, boat shows and events. Hours
spent training or educating the public qualify as community
service.
Marinas also benefit from the Dockwalker Program.
Involvement in this program provides marinas with the
educational materials and tools to operate a clean boating
facility and minimize water quality impacts.
Partnerships with the Santa Monica Bay
Restoration Foundation, the Keep the Delta Clean Program and
many more organizations have made this program successful. Since
the year 2000, more than 600 volunteers have become Dockwalkers
and more than 90,000 boater kits have been distributed
throughout California.
California’s Recreational Boaters Encouraged to Boat Clean and
Green
According to
the California Department of Boating and Waterways (DBW),
California has more
than four million motorized and non-motorized
recreational boaters. The negative impact that these boaters can
have on California’s marine environment and boating facilities,
can be significant.
The good
news is that DBW provides a number of environmental services
that boaters can use to minimize their impact on the marine
environment. Below are some of these services:
Boat
Cleaning Guide Book. The spread
of aquatic invasive species, such as quagga/zebra mussels,
can create havoc in the marine environment and damage motor
boats. The
Boat Cleaning Guide Book was compiled specifically for
boat owners and watercraft users with general guidelines for
all boaters and a basic checklist for inspecting and
cleaning boats and recreational equipment for aquatic
invasive species. There are also additional inspection and
cleaning checklists for specific types of boats and
equipment.
Sewage
Pumpouts. It is
important for boaters to use
sewage pumpouts or
mobile-pumpout services to properly dispose of raw
sewage. In some areas, dumping raw sewage into waterways can
be illegal. Most importantly this practice can be unsafe for
humans and the marine environment. Plan ahead and find out
where your nearest pumpout station is located and how to
properly use it.
Fishing Line
Recycling Stations. Besides
making sure that you keep your trash on board, make sure to
recycle monofilament fishing line appropriately.
Monofilament fishing line can entangle and kill wildlife,
and cause boat damage. Fishing line is not biodegradable and
can remain in the environment for more than 600 years. Take
advantage of shore-side facilities to properly dispose of
trash, or
recycle your fishing line.
Disposing of
a Vessel Properly. Proper
disposal of an unwanted vessel is a vital part of clean and
responsible boating. Because there are several environmental
hazards associated with old vessels, including used oil,
solvents and used batteries, it is important that all vessel
owners properly dispose of their vessels at the appropriate
time. There are
several options for proper vessel disposal: Vessel
Turn-In Program, donating, recycling and dismantling.
Recycle,
Collect, Report. Spill-proof
oil changes with oil absorbent pads and dispose of them and
oil filters properly. Remember to never use soap to disperse
fuel and oil spills. It increases harm to the environment
and it is illegal. Also, remember to report oil spills
immediately to the
corresponding agencies.
For more detailed information on these
environmental services and to find out about other resources
visit
www.BoatResponsibly.com.
A California
interagency taskforce battling the spread of
invasive Quagga and Zebra mussels urges boaters to remain especially vigilant this Memorial Day
weekend. Anyone who launches their vessel at any body of water must
clean, drain, and dry their boats, personal watercraft, and any
equipment that comes in contact with the water-both before arrival
and after leaving the waterway.
"Quagga and zebra mussels are a serious threat to our aquatic environment
and fisheries," Director of the Department of Fish and Game (DFG)
John McCamman said. "It's crucial that everyone who uses public
waters takes the time to make sure they're not moving these mussels
from place to place. It only takes a few mussels to infest an entire
waterway and destroy the ecosystem there."
What you can do to help prevent their spread in
California, visit the DFG Web site at www.dfg.ca.gov/invasives/quaggamussel.
